I might as well just change this blog’s name to “Emily Is Standing On Her Soapbox… Yup, She’s Still There.”
It really bugs me when people use the word “retarded” as an insult. It is far more insulting to the people with actual mental handicaps than it is to whomever you were trying to verbally wound, and it shows a marked lack of compassion for others. Having a mental disability is NOT a bad thing, nor is it anything to be ashamed of, and turning the word “retarded” into something that implies any of the above is, quite frankly, pathetic.
Same thing goes for those who use the word “gay” in a demeaning sense. If “gay” is the only word you can come up with to describe something that is abhorrent to you… perhaps you should revisit your freshmen year English class.
